Amy's Recommended Reads - Winter 2021

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. - Dr. Seuss

In honor of Read Across America Day, start your journey from winter into spring with Amy's recommended reads:

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah- This book resonated deep to my core after dealing with my own depression during a dark, Alaskan winter. The story of a Vietnam veteran and his family where even in the breath-taking beauty and danger of the Last Frontier, they can’t hide their secrets forever.

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare- I always like to start a new year with a classic. Written in 1601 for

Queen Elizabeth 1’s Twelfth Night celebrations, this Shakespearean comedy circles around a set of shipwrecked twins who lose each other and their identities in the mad-capped, love triangles of Illyria.

The Girls of Atomic City by Denise Keirnan- This book shares the history of my new hometown, Oak Ridge, TN, and the untold stories of the local women who stepped into their wartime role by helping to build the world’s first nuclear weapons… and didn’t even know that they were doing it. This is a fascinating read about a Secret City and those that lived and worked here.

Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts- This historical fiction tale takes us back to Oz when it was just a twinkle in the eye of author, L. Frank Baum and allows us a peek behind the curtain at the little “Dorothy” who inspired it all and his steadfast wife who insisted on guiding others down the Yellow Brick Road long after Baum had died.

The Good Neighbor: the life and work of Fred Rogers by Maxwell King- Who doesn’t need a “hug” from Mr Rogers these days? This book shows the insights and determination that Fred Rogers put into his work shaping a TV world for the littlest of inhabitants and how he changed all the rest of us along the way.
